Mathematical Sciences MAJOR
In this unique major, you focus on two of three areas: mathematics, statistics, computer science. These analytical disciplines provide you with theoretical and practical experiences that will benefit you in a wide range of work environments.
When you major in mathematical sciences, you acquire a breadth of knowledge in analytical thinking and learn how to use your creativity to find solutions to technical questions. This major is a good option if you plan on joining the workforce, rather than attending graduate school, after you finish your degree.
What to expect
When you take introductory courses, you learn the fundamentals in each of the three areas: mathematics, statistics and computer science. In the second year, you delve more deeply into calculus and linear algebra while beginning to focus more closely on two of the disciplines.
In your third and fourth years, you broaden and deepen your understanding of your chosen discipline, building on the fundamental knowledge you gained in the first two years. In mathematics, this may mean a focus on geometry, analysis, algebra and discrete or applied math. In statistics, you take applied statistics courses, learning to extract information from more complex data, studying more probability theory and focusing on mathematical statistics. If computer science is one of your chosen disciplines, you focus on database applications, information security or video game development.
