PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

UFV’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate program is an excellent foundation to pursue a career working with young children.

Especially designed for students who are coming out of high school, and those already in the workforce the four-semester program takes you through basic courses in communication, interpersonal growth, human development, and the early childhood curriculum.

You explore the theories and current trends in physical, cognitive and psycho-social development, from conception to the age of eighteen. In addition, you are introduced to different recording techniques that have been developed from observing children’s social, play, language, motor, and cognitive development.

In the third and fourth semesters, you also complete a 200-hour introductory and a 200-hour advanced practicum where you put Early Childhood Education theories into practice, document your experience, and apply advanced competencies including parent interaction, self-evaluation, and peer evaluation.

After completing the program and obtaining a first aid certificate, you can apply to the Provincial Licensing Board of B.C. for a basic license as an early childhood educator.

Following the completion of the certificate, you may also wish to continue your studies by laddering into the Early Childhood Education diploma program, or the Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care at UFV.

CAREER EXPECTATIONS

Your career in ECE will give you a chance to fill a meaningful and fulfilling role in society.

As a graduate you may seek employment in daycares, preschools, nursery schools, special needs centres, the public school system, and infant/toddler centres. Recent shifts in society mean the early years education field is growing, with more demand for the care of young children.

Career opportunities  for early childhood educators span a range of field settings and areas of practice. Graduates may find work in daycares, preschools, nursery schools, special needs centres, public schools, and infant or toddler centres. Career opportunities also exist with community services, governmental organizations, hospitals, and parks and recreation departments.
