Family Studies & Human Development

Are you curious about the challenges of human development, and how families meet those challenges?

When you choose to study Family Studies & Human Development, you will consider the changing structure of families and various ways family and child relations influence economic and social policies. Tailor your degree to explore theories of family structures in Canada, understand how laws and policies can affect families or research the complexity of child development – in the Family Studies program, you decide! Under the guidance of your dedicated and academically renowned professors, you will enhance your writing, research and critical thinking skills through a variety of dynamic courses, including: Immigrant and Refugee Families, Family Practices in a Global World and Comparative Family Policy.

Your Family Studies & Human Development experience doesn’t end in the classroom! Outside the classroom, you have the opportunity to build your resume by receiving the Professional Home Economist designation (PHEc) with the Ontario Home Economics Association. Or, you can take your learning abroad, by taking advantage of an experiential learning trip to Japan. There you will not only learn about education and family relations with our Japanese university partner, but experience Japanese culture!

“ When I first started at Brescia, I didn't know what to expect. As anyone would be, I was extremely nervous. After a few short weeks, I quickly became familiar with the campus, the professors, and the Brescia lifestyle. I am so grateful to have been consistently reminded of the Brescia Bold lifestyle, especially by the most impactful professors, Dr. Descartes and Professor DeMarchi. To me, being bold means remaining confident, aware and grounded within myself. I couldn't have had a more enjoyable and a more life-changing experience than having chosen Family Studies at Brescia, and I am forever grateful for this opportunity! ”

“ The community at Brescia has always been supportive and accommodating when it comes to my varsity wrestling program commitments. I always felt like I could pursue my wrestling goals without having to sacrifice any part of my education. And if nothing else, walking up that hill to Brescia for class every day has definitely contributed to my overall fitness level! ”

“ Being a part of the Family Studies program is invaluable because not only do you learn about the development of families and those around you, but you learn things about yourself that you can implement into your everyday life. I love how applicable everything you learn in this program is and I feel like my social and emotional intelligence have grown immensely by being a part of this program! ”
