The Hematology Residency Training program at Schulich School of Medicine Western University, London, Ontario is a two-year program leading to certification of Special Competence in Hematology & Dentistry. The program will provide the trainee with a broad-based exposure to adult hematology with an emphasis on clinical, diagnostic, and laboratory skills. Exposure to Pediatric Hematology, Medical Oncology, Palliative Care, Pain and Symptom management will also be included.

Our goal is to provide the highest level of quality training in clinical and laboratory hematology in order to prepare trainees for subspecialty careers in Hematology. 

The training program fulfills the requirements of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Trainees are accepted after completion of their three-year residency in Internal Medicine. Core rotations cover all the clinical and laboratory aspects of Hematology. Elective rotations are assigned in order to meet the specific personal goals of each trainee. Learn more about the program

The specific program objectives are based upon the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada guidelines and are designed to provide a solid foundation in clinical and laboratory hematology. 

The program was reviewed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in October 2012 and received full accreditation and a high rating for education services. Our graduates are currently occupying academic and community positions at prestigious institutions in Canada and abroad.

Application

Pre-Requisite Training

Graduates of Canadian medical schools following satisfactory completion of PGY-3 in Internal Medicine. Graduates of international medical schools, MCCEE-accredited, competent in English and who have satisfactorily completed three years of Internal Medicine training at a Canadian medical school are also eligible. 

Application process

Residents applying to the Hematology Subspecialty Program take part in the CARMS match. The application process requires:

  • Completed application form
  • Three letters of recommendation (one from the Internal Medicine Program Director)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Copies of medical school diploma and transcripts
  • Personal statement
Selection Process

Hematology applicants compete for a maximum of two competitive positions per year available in the Department of Medicine. Selected applicants will be invited to visit London to interview and to meet with faculty members and Fellows and have a tour of the facilities.
