English at the University of Toronto Scarborough

Explore how words change the world while you gain the skills to analyze and interpret texts, creatively solve problems, conduct cutting-edge research and evaluate evidence. Our courses take you through history and around the globe as you study written, oral and visual texts in English across fiction, non-fiction, stories, poems, graphic novels and films. And you won’t just read; our curriculum is embedded with opportunities to hone your creative and critical writing skills, and our campus frequently has opportunities to publish your work. Both our specialist and major programs have co-op options that allow you to pursue two four-month work terms — you’ll apply your learning, build connections and graduate with eight months of paid work experience.

Our specialist program is an unparalleled opportunity for in-depth and advanced work in literary studies, and is built to give you constant opportunities to broaden your understanding and explore your interests. Our major program is a perfect fit if you have multiple interests — it’s designed to be taken alongside another major, whether from a related or totally distinct field. You’ll also have your choice of an exciting range of minors, including creative writing and literature and film studies.
