FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

History

History Program

We are the products of our collective experiences, and the continual upheaval and development of human society demands that individuals and institutions constantly adapt to new changes. As historians, we have an obligation to sharpen our awareness of the mechanics of change, and so far as it is possible, to explain it.

What Do You Learn in a History Program?

As a student of the History program at McMaster, you will develop essential research and communication skills. You’ll learn to think critically, to ask the right questions and, when you’ve found the answers, to present your evidence in a logical way. You will learn that historians are faced with many intriguing questions when dealing with the past: not merely is this the truth?, but whose truth is this? Most of all, perhaps, you will learn to think globally, by discovering how developments in one part of the world have far-reaching effects elsewhere.

Students can major in history, combine history with another subject or take history as a minor.

Students wishing to enter into a History major will apply at the end of their first year. Application for Admission to Level II will occur in mid-March on the Mosaic student information system. Visit the ‘Choosing Your Program’ guide for more information.

Here are just a few that we recommend to all history students as they make plans for a well-rounded history education.

About First Year
