Program description
This 720-hour program, consisting of three 240-hour levels, is designed to provide you with theoretical knowledge of all aspects of masonry, brick and stone work as well as the practical training necessary to complement your on-the-job training experience. Completion of this program confers the graduate an Ontario College Certificate titled Masonry Techniques - Apprenticeship.Program details

Brick and Stone Practice II
MASO2215
In the practice component of brick and stone students will have opportunity to practice the concepts and theories studied. Students will learn how to handle the tools, equipment, material and supplies including power and hand tools and will have opportunity to install masonry materials such as masonry veneer, and masonry accessories. Students will be required to interpret drawings for masonry projects, and demonstrate the ability to estimate materials and supplies to accepted standards. A requirement will be to use math and problem solving skills as they plan, prepare and build masonry projects. Students will be expected to interact with others in a professional manner consistent with industry best practices.

Safety for Brick and Stone II
MASO2220
In this course students will gain an overview of safety in masonry and address the various hazards present on construction sites. Masonry safety equipment, practices and regulations encountered on a typical construction site will be discussed. Other topics include how to prepare and dismantle scaffolding according to industry specifications, required PPE, and how to set and use suspended access equipment , all in accordance with required codes, specifications and regulations of the trade.

Course details
Brick and Stone Theory III
MASO3200
Students will gain an knowledge of the masonry trade and address the various masonry applications in relation to a construction site. Masonry related tools, equipment, material and supplies encountered on a typical construction site will be discussed. Other topics include how to prepare and dismantle a site according to industry specifications, procedures for building foundation walls, trade practices, and how to prepare masonry surfaces, all in accordance with required codes, specifications and regulations of the trade. Students will also learn techniques for interpreting architectural drawings and related documents and contracts.

Program outcomes
- Select, use, and maintain hand and power tools and equipment to complete projects in the brick and stone trade that meet safe work practices and industry standards.
- Estimate time and material quantities from residential, commercial, and industrial plans and specifications to meet budget requirements.
- Communicate effectively with clients and team members in visual, written, and oral form to share project details that meet client requirements and industry standards.
- Interpret construction layouts and blueprint specifications to assemble and repair decorative, structural, and non-structural masonry projects by adhering to industry best practices and relevant codes (such as the Ontario Building Code) and acts (such as the Occupations Health and Safety Act).
- Select materials, finishes, and methods of application to meet specifications of residential, commercial, and industrial projects following building science models and energy efficiency parameters.

Brick and stone masons lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone and other similar materials to construct or repair walls, arches, chimneys, fireplaces and other structures in accordance with blueprints and specifications.
