Program Overview

The Welding Techniques Program provides graduates with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and extensive practical hands-on skills to find employment in a variety of industries and trades.

Program Highlights

  • Graduates will be proficient in Arc and MIG welding to be hired as entry-level welders in a variety of industries and trades.
  • Graduates have the option to pay for and attempt the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certifications. St. Clair College is a certified CWB training and testing centre.
  • Welding continues to be in demand locally, provincially and nationally. Companies regularly seek St. Clair College grads.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are prepared for positions in several trades such as welder, boilermaker, pipefitter, steamfitter, plumber, iron worker and sheet metal worker.

Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of courses at the College (C), University (U), University/College (M) or Open (O) level, plus:

  • Grade 11 Math (C) or (U)

The standard tuition and compulsory fees for the current academic year:

For programs with Experiential Learning (Work Placement/Internship): Costs for accommodation, if needed, travel and related expenses is at the student's own expense. It is recommended for most programs, that students have access to a laptop or desktop computer while away from home during experiential learning periods.

Textbooks and other materials are in addition to Tuition Fees. Textbook prices may be found through the Bookstore website.

Welding Techniques (Ontario College Certificate) (MTCU Code 44900)

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Perform work responsibly and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  2. Interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to produce basic graphics and welding projects as required by industry.
  3. Use layout and fabrication processes typical to the industry to determine correct form with accuracy.
  4. Perform trade-related mathematical calculations and technical measurements using appropriate tools and devices.
  5. Perform weld and cutting applications utilizing Shielded Metal Arc (SMAW), Flux Core (FCAW), Gas metal Arc (GMAW-Mig Welding), Gtaw(Tig), OAC/W(oxy-acetylene cutting/welding), and plasma cutting, according to industry standards.
  6. Create welds on various types of materials and joints in the major welding positions to industrial standards and codes.
  7. Assess weld quality and implement corrective action where required to follow quality control and quality assurance procedures that meet organizational standards and requirements.
  8. Identify and use strategies for ongoing professional development and career advancement in the welding field.
