The Department of Law and Legal Studies offers innovative courses that explore the dynamic interaction between law and society. As Canada’s premier program for the interdisciplinary study of the law, we provide students with both academic and professional opportunities that take advantage of our location in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. Our alumni go on to careers in government, advocacy, business, criminal justice, law and legal practice, law enforcement, policy analysis, public relations and more.

The Carleton Advantage

You will learn about the law, and its role in society, from professors with backgrounds in criminology, history, philosophy, political theory, feminist studies, religion, sociology, legal anthropology, political economy, communications and law.

You can pursue concentrations in Law, Policy and Government, Business Law, and Transnational Law and Human Rights. Co-operative Education (Co-op) is offered for students in the Law, Policy and Government and Business Law concentrations.

Studying in the nation’s capital offers a huge advantage to our students. Our faculty, instructors, and classroom visitors share their expertise from careers in national and international arenas.

You will have the opportunity to participate in an internship or Co-op on Parliament Hill, with a law firm, nongovernmental agencies, the federal public service and more.

The program can lead you to a variety of careers in fields such as government, law, consulting, finance, and insurance.
