Education Program Requirements

Admission into King's Education After-Degree programs is for Fall term only. This is a competitive program for admission.

Ongoing; applicants will be evaluated in the order that they are received. Ongoing until program reaches capacity. 2 weeks from a letter of admission being offered.

Elementary Education admission requirements

  • A 3-year or 4-year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • A minimum 2.50 GPA in the last 60 credits of study
  • Breadth of study prerequisite courses:
    • 6 credits English
    • 3 credits in each of the following: Canadian Studies, Math, Natural Sciences, History, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences.
    • EDUC 300 - Philosophy of Education. Applicants who have not completed this prerequisite course requirement would be required to complete it as a first year co-requisite if admitted to the Education program.

Secondary Education admission requirements

  • A 3-year or 4-year Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • A minimum 2.50 GPA in the last 60 credits of study
  • 33 credits in a teachable major (see below)
  • 18 credits in a teachable minor (see below)
  • Breadth of study prerequisite courses:
    • 6 credits English
    • 3 credits in at least two of the following areas (may not overlap with teachable major and minor): Canadian Studies, Natural Sciences, History, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Math.
    • EDUC 300 - Philosophy of Education. Applicants who have not completed this prerequisite course requirement would be required to complete it as a first year co-requisite if admitted to the Education program.

There may space within the Elementary and Secondary B.Ed. program to finish some course requirements if needed. This will be assessed on an individual basis.

Additional documents required for admission

In addition to submitting an application and post-secondary transcripts, applicants will be required to submit the following documents:

Personal statement of work experience with children or adolescents

Statement written and signed by the applicant outlining previous work experience with children or adolescents. Work experience can be volunteer or paid experience. In the event that the applicant has multiple experiences to write about, they are encouraged to do so.

Applicants who have completed EDUC 251 at King’s are not required to submit this statement.

Supervisor confirmation of work experience with children or adolescents

Statement written and signed by a current or past supervisor of the applicant outlining the applicant's previous work experience with children or adolescents. Applicants who provide multiple examples in their personal statements are only required to submit one supervisor confirmation of work experience.

Applicants who have completed EDUC 251 at King’s are not required to submit this statement.

Philosophy of Education assignment

Upon application to the program, applicants will receive access to their application portal. The portal will link to an assignment containing two questions addressing the applicant’s personal philosophy of education:

  • Explain how your personal qualities, capabilities, and your prior experiences with children and youth have prepared you to be a successful teacher. (500 words or less)
  • Some teachers believe that good teaching is a simple process of transmitting neutral facts. Others believe that good teaching must shape character and behaviour, even foster a sense of social responsibility. What do you believe? Describe your understanding of good teaching and how you might demonstrate this in your own classroom. (500 words of less)

Questions must be submitted by way of the online form only. Submission of a written supplementary document will not be accepted.

Applicants who have completed EDUC 300 at King’s are not required to submit this form.

Applicants who hold international credentials (other than from the United States) must provide a WES course-by-course assessment as part of their documentation requirements. Applicants who already hold an Education credential from another country are considered special status applicants.

  • General Physical Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Geography)

  • General Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Geography, Mathematics, Computing Science)

  • Mathematics

  • Music

  • Physical Education (Physical education, kinesiology, physical activity)

  • Social Studies (Anthropology, economics, history, human geography, interdisciplinary studies, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, theology/religious studies)

Additional minor teaching areas

  • Art (Studio art, Art history)
  • Physics
  • Second Languages  (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Punjabi, Spanish, Ukrainian)

For majors or minors with courses from more than one subject, at least three subjects must be presented with senior courses in at least two. Minors in physics and second languages must be completed before admission into the B.Ed. program.

Interview

Applicants who meet all of the criteria for admission will be contacted for an interview with the Dean of Education. Applicants who have completed both EDUC 251 and EDUC 300 at King’s may not require an interview.

Students who already have an education credential

Students who hold an education credential from another country are considered special status students at King’s. Special status students are considered for admission into the Bachelor of Education After-Degree subject to space in the program and are placed on the waitlist until August 15.

Special status applicants are required to submit a copy of the letter provided to them by Alberta Education outlining the classroom hours and coursework required in order to be eligible for teacher certification in Alberta. An evaluation of existing credentials by Alberta Education can be initiated on the Government of Alberta website.
