Environmental Studies (Science) School: Langara College Faculty: Arts and Science - University Transfer Programs Degree: Associate ; University Transfer Field of Study: Environmental Studies Description: In a time of increasing globalization, where human activity is now seen to have far-reaching, often adverse, implications for the world's ecosystems, it is essential to have the awareness, knowledge, skill, and experience to address these issues. Environmental understanding, protection, and remediation are significant, growing concerns in today’s society. Environmental Studies at Langara College draws from four critical study areas - biology, chemistry, english, geography – as well as including a number of specific environmental courses. Elective courses are chosen from a wide range of subjects to suite a particular student’s interests. A one-week field school is conducted at the end of the second year. Environmental Studies is an interdisciplinary program offering students the opportunity to obtain a solid grasp of the physical principles governing the form and function of the earth and the social aspects affecting the nature of human impact on the environment. Program participants will also gain critical thinking skills, analytical ability, a deeper understanding of environmental issues, and a sense of local and global awareness, preparing them to address complex environmental issues. All courses have university-transfer credit, providing students with the option of further study should they wish to obtain a university degree in Environmental Studies or other arts and science disciplines. Block transfer agreements with BC universities allow entry into the third year of certain programs. Length: 2 Year(s) Admission Requirements Prerequisites: The academic requirements for admission to Langara College are: Successful completion of a BC secondary program (Grade 12) or the equivalent, or Be at least 19 years of age by the first day of the first semester of attendance, or Successful completion of an A.B.E.
