5 Tips for Job Success

As an international student studying in Canada, working in Canada upon graduation is often an important goal. Whether you are arriving to study at one of Canada’s schools, graduating and looking for a job, or emigrating to start your career, Canada is a country that has great opportunities.

Working in Canada is not only economically rewarding, but can also be personally enriching, and can bring about wonderful experiences that will compliment your education, life, and future career. Finding a job, although at times stressful, can be easier by simply utilizing all of your opportunities, resources, and abilities. Often times, many students are unaware of what is available to them to aid them in their future careers. It is not all about the big and shiny diplomas at the end of the tunnel, but also about the experiences and partnerships you pickup along the way.

Following these five simple steps can be very empowering to students who are looking for better luck in the globally competitive job market, while also getting the most out of their own education.

1. Visit your school’s career centre, or international student career centre. This is a great starting resource to help guide your initial search for both on and off campus job opportunities.

2. Network with other students on campus. Finding jobs is becoming increasingly competitive and you never know where or how one will become available. Using all your resources, including building new relationships with different groups on campus, is critical.

3. Work on building a solid resume and cover letter. Being able to sell yourself, which also includes interviewing well, is essential in securing your dream position. Practice compiling a list of relevant work and volunteer experience, your skills, and educational achievements to help focus and brighten your name on paper. If you lack some of these experiences, create them!

4. Try volunteering in a field, or area that interests you to get your foot in the door. These will not only fuel your interest but also help you gain valuable career experience.

5. Speak with your professors after class and get to know them. Maybe talk up your foreign heritage, international experiences, or plans. Professors and instructors can be a valuable resource when connecting you to a job, especially one in your field.
