Preparing for Waterloo and settling in Canada

Starting a life away from home is a new and exciting experience. The University of Waterloo is committed to making your transition as smooth and easy as possible! We have a variety of support services on campus, from helping you find a job to ensuring your academic success.

Getting organised
The International Student Experience (ISE) helps prepare you for your trip to Canada and your time at Waterloo. The website for new students gives you all the information you need.

The ISE also offers a number of programs to help you adjust to life in Canada. You could join the Global Representatives Program, to be paired with a Waterloo student from your home country, or the International Peer Mentors program, to get matched with a volunteer. “International Peer Mentors provides a great opportunity for international students to meet new people and make friends with domestic students.” says Juno, a 4th year Biology student.

Arriving in Canada
Our Student Success Office provides a program called International Student Life 101. It connects you with other students, lets you experience residence, and highlights strategies and resources you can use to make a smooth transition to Canada. This 3-day, overnight session takes place in late August, right before school begins.

Preparing for classes
Once you’re settled in, the ISE will help you become familiar with quest (our online student information system) and pick up your Watcard (our university ID). They’ll also help you find your way around campus so you’re ready for your first class!
