UNBC’s Gender Studies MA program was the first gender studies graduate degree in Canada. Our Gender Studies MA is an interdisciplinary program that offers the opportunity to work with scholars and peers who share a focus on women and/or gender as a category of analysis.

Being interdisciplinary in approach, the program has particular strengths in areas such as gender history; gender in literature; gender, colonialism, and post-colonialism; gender and globalization; gender and sexuality; gender and health; gender and the environment; and gender and international studies. Gender Studies graduate students have the opportunity to design a course of study that incorporates gender- or feminism-based methodologies and interdisciplinary while developing expertise in an area of concentration. While providing a transnational frame of reference, we also pay attention to the national and regional; therefore, students emerge from the program with both a broad analytical framework and a well-developed focus.

To submit your application online, you will need:

• Unofficial copies of transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended (unofficial transcripts). Transcripts should be submitted in the original language they were produced in, accompanied by English translations (if required). International applicants are required to upload proof of degree as well. For more information see requirements for including transcripts with your application.
• In general, applicants to a Master’s degree program must hold a four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
• Domestic applicants are normally required to have a minimum overall average of 3.00 (B) for third- and fourth-year courses.
• A statement of academic interest (programs may have specific requirements for the statement of interest, please review the program specific admission requirements below for specific program requirements).
• Name and contact information for your references (an institutional email address is required). References should be submitted no later than 2 weeks after the published deadline for your program. Please review our guide to tracking your application to monitor receipt of your references.

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) or Pearson Test of English (Academic)

• Letter(s) of Reference
• Statement of Research Interests

• Applicants are required to contact a prospective supervisor whose research interests closely align with their own and advise the potential supervisor on which pathway they are applying for (thesis or course-based). The applicant must include the potential supervisor's email confirmation with the application, preferably in PDF form. Applications will NOT be able to submit an application without this confirmation.  Since admission into this program is highly competitive, the potential supervisor agreement does not guarantee admission into the MA Gender Studies program.  
• Sample of written academic work (maximum 10 pages)
• You will be asked to upload a sample of written academic work at the time of application. This is usually a senior-level undergraduate research paper (maximum of 10 pages).
