Description:The Special Care Counselling program leads to a rewarding career path that offers students the chance to work with people who have physical, mental, intellectual, neurological, emotional and behavioural issues. The Special Care Counselling program provides people-oriented students with the professional skills necessary to develop therapeutic relationships and give support to a broad range of people of all ages who have special needs. Students are trained to assess, develop, implement and evaluate goal-directed clinical interventions designed to enhance a person’s quality of life. Students of the Special Care Counselling program participate in three separate supervised internship placements where they can put into practice the skills they learn in course work.

Graduates are employed by schools, residential treatment centers, youth protection services, shelters, hospitals, community centers and day treatment programs, and in agencies and community organizations that provide specialized services to families as well as individuals with physical, neurological, psychosocial, mental health and developmental needs and older adults.The placement rate for graduates of this program is virtually 100%. Starting salaries area bout $36,000 a year.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
  •   English  or   Français 
Admission to the College is on the basis of the Quebec Secondary School Diploma (Diplôme d’études secondaires); or the Québec Diploma of Vocational Education (Diplôme d’études professionnelles) with Secondary 5 fi rst & second languages as well as Secondary 4 Mathematics; or equivalent schooling completed outside the province.

A letter of intent and references must be submitted with the application. Student interviews may be requested. Volunteer work with individuals and/or groups with special needs are a serious asset, as life experiences and personal interests are taken into consideration.
