Description:

Design Formation is a two year, multidisciplinary foundational program that prepares students for further specialized studies or entry-level jobs in fields ranging from visual merchandizing to event, graphic, or interior design.



This program is ideal for creative people of all ages and backgrounds, from recent high-school graduates to mature students wishing to update their credentials. The classroom and workshop is close-knit, intimate, and collaborative. Our faculty, who are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable about the design world at large support this community feeling. We aim to promote a comprehensive understanding of the design process and expose students to various aspects of the field. This allows graduates to explore their own creative path with a broad set of skills and experience.

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Applicants are required to have completed BC Grade 12 or equivalent, or be 19 years of age or older. All students applying to the Design Formation Program must have a level of English sufficient to write assignments, understand class lectures, follow design briefs, and take part in class discussions.

    Test Scores:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based)
    Application Notes :

    Students will be required to provide proof of English language proficiency in one of the following ways: English Studies 12 with a minimum "C" grade; Literary Studies 12 with a minimum "C"; English First Peoples 12 with a minimum "C" grade; completion of BC English 12, OR BC English Literature 12, OR BC English First Peoples 12; IB English A1 or A2 (HL or SL) with a minimum score of 4; LPI (Language Proficiency Index) level 4 with essay of 24; LET (Langara English Test) level 2 or higher; TOEFL - internet based (IBT) score of 80 or higher and a minimum of 20 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, and 20 in Writing (taken within the last 2 years); TOEFL - paper based 550 or higher and an essay score of 4.0 or higher (taken within the last 2 years); IELTS 6.5; Duolingo English Test with a score of 110; CAEL - Canadian Academic Language assessment test - minimum level 60 overall; Successful completion of a post-secondary English or communications course for which Langara College awards transfer credit; Completion of ACCESS Langara English 1120 with a minimum "C" grade; Advanced Placement: English Language and Composition with a score of 3, OR English Literature and Composition with a score of 3.



    Once you are admitted into the Design Formation Program, you may be required to take a Langara English placement test (or equivalent) and be placed into an appropriate English course based on your score. Six credits of English are required to complete the Design Formation Diploma.

    Applicants are required to have a portfolio review and interview. Additionally, attendance at a program information session is mandatory.
