Description:Sustainability, water management, production horticulture, and urban agriculture are vital elements of the world in which we live. Horticulture studies explore the production and management of plants, the management of pests, landscapes, soils and water systems to achieve productive and sustainable systems. Olds College has been offering programs within the horticulture field for over 50 years making us the experts within this field. Students have the option of studying for four years to obtain the prestigious and sought after, Bachelor of Applied Science degree, but along with this credential students will also receive a Horticulture Technologist diploma in two years, and a Horticulture Technician certificate after the first year. The program is unique and graduates will apply their knowledge and skills in the areas of horticulture crops, landscape design, construction and maintenance. The curriculum is a blended delivery of both online learning and applied theory directed to specific case studies. The programming also includes a new field school aspect designed to supply students with practical applications and reinforce on-the-job learning skills. While achieving these goals within the field school, students will have the opportunity to earn a wage while they learn.

Admission Requirements


These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.

  •  Grade12 English 
  •  Grade11 Applied Mathematics  or  Grade11 Pure Mathematics 

Applicants coming into the Certificate must have 50% or better in English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2; 50% or better in Math 20-1 or 20-2; and 50% or better in two of Biology 20, Chemistry 20, Science 20, OR One of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Science 30. Applicants coming into the Diploma must have a 2.0 GPA in a completed horticulture certificate or consent of the department.

Test Scores:
  • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 60] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Computer Based) [min. 79] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 550]

Alternate Admission Status applies if you do not meet the Alberta high school requirements of the program to which you are applying, or if you received your high school education through home based learning. Alternate Admission Status students may be required to meet specific program admission requirements. To apply under this status, you must submit a transcript(s) showing any completed high school and post-secondary courses, a letter in support of your application outlining aspects of your background and experience that might have prepared you for the program and a resume of work experience. Documents such as a letters of reference from previous educators or employers, and/or a portfolio of related academic/project work may be included with your application.
