Description:The MSc(RS) OMPT field of study develops a specialization standard in musculoskeletal-manipulative clinical practice through three required foundation courses, two Clinical Specialty courses and one Research Project over a 2-3 year timeline. The objective of this OMPT field of study is to advance scientific knowledge, clinical reasoning application, clinical and research skills development with a broad appreciation of the concepts of clinical measurement, and integrated evidence-based practice in OMPT practice. This specialization field of study is offered part-time and primarily online (with two on-site lab periods and one residency period).

Admission Requirements

Prerequisites:*These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school.
    Applicants are required to have a four (4) year pass or honours or graduate-entry Master or professional doctorate degree in physiotherapy. Degrees and grades from foreign universities are evaluated for their equivalency to a McMaster University four (4) year undergraduate degree. Prospective applicants who do not hold a four (4) year undergraduate degree, but who have several years of work experience that is relevant to the program, should discuss their situation with the Program Coordinator. Additional courses may be required under these circumstances. Evidence of ability to do graduate work will still be required.

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 237] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 580] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery [min. 85]
    Application Notes : Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to submit an official copy of their TOEFL score, or other evidence of competency in English is required. A minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 100 (580 on the paper-based TOEFL test or 237 on the computer-based TOEFL test) is needed for the Faculty of Health Sciences. Students taking the IELTS are required to achieve a minimum score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 5.5 in each category. Students taking the MELAB are required to achieve a minimum score of 85. Equivalent scores on other recognized tests may also be considered. Each of these scores are only valid for 2 years. Students who have completed an Academic ESL program through Canadian academic institutions may petition to have this considered in lieu of TOEFL. Applicants may be exempted from this requirement if they have completed a university degree at which English is the language of instruction.

    Applicants are required to have five (5) years full-time relevant professional experience (or equivalent) with two (2) years in a specialty area. Applicants are also required to submit two (2) academic references (applicants have the option of providing one (1) work-related reference in addition to two (2) academic references), an up-to-date curriculum vitae, and a letter (maximum two (2) pages) outlining the proposed training plan (supervisor and research area), research interests and experience, and, long term career goals.
