Description:The Department of Linguistics offers graduate programs in linguistics leading to the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy. The Department maintains extensive laboratory and computer facilities for a wide range of research in experimental phonetics and phonology; psycholinguistics and quantitative linguistics; corpus linguistics; cognitive linguistics; acquisition and bilingualism; field linguistics and language documentation; typology and language variation.



The PhD program in our Department requires the completion of 18 credits (6 courses) of coursework, selected by students in conjunction with their Supervisor, plus two additional courses (LING 693 and LING 694) leading up to Doctoral Candidacy. Doctoral Candidacy is the second stage of the PhD programme, and involves the writing of two Generals Papers and a Prospectus (the Candidacy Portfolio), and the completion of an Oral Doctoral Candidacy Examination. The final stage in the degree is the writing and defence of a Doctoral Dissertation.

    Provisional candidates for the PhD must normally hold the equivalent of the MSc in Linguistics at the University of Alberta with a GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 600] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 100] or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment [min. 60]
