DescriptionAt The University of Calgary, we offer a 5-year specialist training program in Anesthesia, recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Fellowships and Post-Graduate degree programs are available. The Residency Training Program also administers a 12-month curriculum in Family Practice Anesthesia that will become an Enhancement year under the CFPC in the near future.

Training occurs at all hospital sites in the Calgary Health Region. All sites take responsibility for training our residents, and all sites have a voice on the Residency Training Committee. We constantly strive to accomplish the right balance of general vs. subspecialty training; tertiary care vs. “community” care experiences; and rigorous training vs. resident wellness. Our goal is to graduate excellent, well-rounded physicians who possess the specialized knowledge and skills required in modern Anesthetic practice, including perioperative care, acute and chronic pain management, critical care, and subspecialty Anesthesia. Teaching and evaluation also encompass the other CanMEDS competencies: Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Health Care Advocate, Scholar, and Professional.
