DescriptionThe Division of Cardiac Surgery at Western is comprised of eight faculty members who perform an annual total of 1400 adult cardiac surgical procedures at the University Hospital, as well as innovative clinical research. Our division is a national leader in minimally invasive/robotic coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve repair surgery and has accrued over five years of experience with the da Vinci Intuitive Surgical robot. Additional specialized areas of expertise include cardiac transplantation (almost 600 to date), off pump coronary artery bypass surgery and surgical education. We have a highly successful cardiac surgery residency training program, which received its last full accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2006.

The Division of Cardiac Surgery has also been very active in research and members have been very productive academically via peer-reviewed research grants, presentations at national and international meetings and the publication of full-length papers in leading journals. Members of our division conduct pre-clinical research in CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies and Advanced Robotics), within the Lindros Legacy Pavilion at the University Hospital.
