Prerequisites NotesCandidates for the MSc degree will normally have a BSc (Honours or Specialization) degree or the equivalent from a recognized university, with a strong background in applied or pure mathematics and/or statistics. For some specialization areas, other BSc degrees, for instance in Physics or Computing Science, will also be considered. Applicants must also have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 in the last two years (*60) of relevant undergraduate work (or graduate work) at the University of Alberta, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.

DescriptionThe Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in a number of fields in the general areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical finance, mathematical physics, statistics, and biostatistics. The Department also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics for applicants who wish to take a recognized package of courses with a view to increasing their mastery of an accreditation in Statistics. Prospective graduate students should consult the Graduate Chair with regard to facilities available and the background required for the field in which they are particularly interested.
