Record Producers

(NOC 5225)

The following comments cover the career grouping Creative and Performing Artists, which includes Record Producers.

Although the retirement rate in this occupation is below the overall economic average, the majority of job openings over the 2011-2020 period will arise from replacement needs due to retirement. The relatively low retirement rate in this occupation is due to the fact that workers are generally younger and retire later than the occupational average. Expansion demand will still represent an appreciable source of job openings. The number of new jobs will, however, be much lower than over the 1999-2008 period. After prosperous years for Canadian motion pictures, the recent appreciation of the Canadian dollar resulted in a decrease in Canadian competition in foreign film production, and the tightening of finances in the Canadian Television Fund will also hinder the renewal of investments in television production with Canadian content. Moreover, technological improvements will continue to reduce the demand for workers in this occupation. A rather large number of workers will leave this occupation for others because of the often precarious status of employment in motion pictures, performing arts, broadcasting and photography.
