Program Information

School:University of Toronto - Scarborough
Faculty:Social Sciences
Degree:Bachelor; Honours
Field of Study:Development Economics and International Development
Description:One of the most unique and dynamic programs found at UTSC, International Development Studies is a multidisciplinary study of how and why countries develop differently from each other. It ties together fields like Geography, Political Science, Anthropology, Environmental Science, Economics and Development Studies to make it a truly unique academic discipline. Students will not only delve into the many disciplines that contribute to the development of nations, but learn how to tie each discipline together to analyze, prescribe, and engage development problems such as poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, governance and urbanization. Students will not only learn the complex dynamics of development theory, but will be given practical experience that is essential to professional development.

The Co-op program is one of the most sought after programs at the University. The Co-op option includes working in a developing region across the globe for approximately 8-12 months. Students work with internationally reputable NGOs such as OXFAM, UNICEF and DFATD (formerly CIDA), and have worked in countries all around the world, such as Bolivia, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Thailand, Cuba, India and Mexico.
