Program Information

School:Western University
Faculty:Engineering
Degree:Bachelor; Co-op; Honours
Field of Study:Structural Engineering
Description:Civil engineers build and improve communities by providing essential infrastructure, solving environmental problems caused by industrialization and resource consumption, and by mitigating natural disasters. In our established Structural Engineering option, you'll take courses in areas such as Structural Theory and Design, Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Design, Steel Design, Structural Dynamics, Finite Element Design and Tall Buildings, Soil Mechanics, Business, Engineering Ethics, Sustainable Development and Law.

The International Development option introduces you to the complex societal, environmental, political and economic issues associated with building safer communities in Canada and in the developing world. A centerpiece of the International Development option is the Summer Community Development Placement and Design Project where students have an opportunity to work for four months in developing countries, or in-need communities in Canada.

As an Engineering student, you'll have the option to enroll in the "With Co-Op" version of your program and complete a minimum of 3 co-op terms to graduate with a 'Bachelor of Engineering Science with Co-Op' degree. In addition to the practical experience and competitive salary you'll gain through summer and/or long-term co-ops, your employment will count towards the four years experience you need to be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
