Applicants much have completed a post-secondary program in the areas in which they plan to specialize. If they have not completed prior study in the desired area of specialization, students are encouraged to apply to our program but should be prepared to complete some additional study so that they have the foundational knowledge needed to conduct in-depth, independent research in the field.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (Internet Based) [min. 90] or Test of English as a Foreign Language (Paper Based) [min. 577] or International English Language Testing System (academic or immigration) [min. 6.5]
|Application Notes : ||A completed Application Form and $100 (CDN) application fee payable by valid credit card; Three letters of reference (preferably academic, one of which normally should be from the student’s MA supervisor); Official transcripts from all previous institutions of higher education (if the transcript is not in English or French, a certified translation must also be submitted); A detailed statement of purpose outlining research goals and the main area of concentration within the doctoral program. This statement must also describe how this program will address the stated research goals. To this end, applicants are advised to consult the list of full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty members and relate their goals to the research interests cited there. Canadian citizens and landed immigrants must supply proof of their status in Canada (i.e., copy of a birth certificate, immigration papers); International Students whose first language is neither English nor French must also include an official record of one of the following: iBTOEFL (90+), or paper based TOEFL (577+), or IELTS (7.0+); Permanent residents whose first language is neither English nor French must pass an English placement test and attain the level of ENGL 212 or higher. These tests are administered through Concordia’s English Department. All applicants must also submit a sample of their written scholarly work in English or French, for example, a chapter from a M.A. thesis or a research paper.
