Description:This specialization builds on the BSc in Nutrition and Food Science degree to focus on Dietetics and Nutrition. Be part of an interprofessional healthcare team translating scientific, medical, and nutritional information into practical, individualised diets and meal plans for people. With this degree, you can go on to practice as a Registered Dietitian or Registered Nutritionist in Alberta.

The BSc in Nutrition and Food Science degree in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences will give you a diverse education covering the fundamentals of nutritional science as well as food manufacturing, preservation, storage, and distribution. You’ll learn how biology, behaviour, physiology, and other applied sciences play a role in nutrition and food science. This degree prepares you for a range of careers in the public and private sectors, from nutrition-lifestyle management to food quality assurance.

This program does not allow admission directly from high school. Preprofessional Study Time: Normally one year in Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science, Nutrition and Food General Program. A minimum of ★27, ★30 preferred (★ = units of course weight) transferable to the program: BIO 107 (★3), CHEM 101, 102 (★6), CHEM 164 or 261 (★3), ENGL (or equivalent) (★6), NUTR 100 (★3), NUFS 100 (★3), STAT 151 (★3), Free Elective (*3).

Applicants must submit a letter with their application for admission stating their career goals, knowledge of the profession, related experience, and reasons for seeking admission to the Dietetics Specialization. Prospective students should have spoken with a Registered Dietitian and undertaken significant career exploration prior to seeking admission.

The interview evaluates the applicant's maturity, initiative, ability to communicate, leadership skills and critical thinking abilities.

Interview selection is based on academic achievement in the prerequisite courses, overall academic achievement (emphasizing recent academic performance), and the content and format of their Letter of Intent.
