Profile

Dynamic, modern, and highly learner-centred, we acknowledge all of our students as valued leaders of tomorrow, whose education and success are most paramount to our institution. Both campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia promise the total university experience: a blend of academic excellence and opportunity with a rich variety of social and recreational activities. We also promise excellence in research; Lakehead is the proud host to 11 Canada Research Chairs and revolutionary facilities such as our world-renowned Paleo-DNA Laboratory and our Biorefining Research Institute. Nestled under the shadow of the stoic Sleeping Giant, our Thunder Bay campus is among the most picturesque in the nation. Fieldwork and hands-on learning are integral to a high number of our programs, taking advantage of the vibrant, natural laboratories right in our backyard. Our northern landscape also presents ample opportunity for world-class outdoor sports and activities. Students here can opt to take a ski break or hiking trip between study sessions and maintain an ideal work-play balance with ease. At Lakehead University you'll join a community that will push you to defy limitations and challenge conventions. Meet some of the students, faculty, alumni, and members of the university community to understand why Lakehead was the right choice for them - and you!

Areas of Expertise

Lakehead offers 29 graduate programs in both academic and professional disciplines, and we are planning to develop exciting interdisciplinary degrees in the areas of biotechnology, Northern Studies, and applied Health Sciences (Lakehead University is also home to the Western campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine). We have filled six of our seven Canada Research Chairs positions in Aging and Health, Industrial Waste Management, Technoculture Studies, Sustainable Water Management and the Boreal Forest, Molecular Food Microbiology, and Aboriginal Education. Our facilities include the Advanced Technology and Academic Centre (which revolutionizes the interface of learning and technology), the Living Legacy Forest, the Paleo-DNA Laboratory, and the robotics laboratory, as well as a state of the art instrumentation lab.
