Established in 1936 and located on Canada’s magnificent West Coast, Vancouver Island University (VIU) is a public university offering more than 120 programs in popular areas of study like Business, Tourism, Sport and Recreation and Hospitality; Humanities, Social Sciences and Education; Sciences, Computers and Technology; and Art, Design and Performing Arts.

Each year over 16,000 new and returning students, including 1,700 international students, choose VIU for their education. Vancouver Island University provides a range of educational opportunities from one year certificates and two year diplomas to four year university degree completion programs and post-graduate opportunities in business, language and fisheries.

English Language Certificate

Students from around the world come to Vancouver Island University for our English language certificate programs that prepare students for effective communication and to enter academic programs. When students complete our language program, they are granted 3 academic credits toward their diploma or degree.

Academic Programs

Vancouver Island University has four year bachelor degrees, two year diplomas, and one year certificate programs in a range of areas.

Business (M.B.A./M.Sc.I.B., post-graduate diploma, Bachelor of Business Administration)

Our 14 to 16 month Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program is very popular with business or non-business graduates looking for a very intensive exciting program to help improve their career prospects and to work in Canada after graduation. Non-business graduates are also entering our post-degree diploma in Business providing them with focused business skills. These programs compliment our Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) and Business diploma programs that have eight streams for students - Accounting, Economics, Financial Services, Human Resources Management, International Business, Marketing, and Management.

Tourism and Hospitality

Students can work and study in our Tourism and Hospitality Management programs that offer cooperative education, which means students work full-time for four months each year that they study. A great way to get Canadian work experience and earn some money!

Science and Technology

Vancouver Island University’s Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programs are respected for their small class size and excellence in teaching, computer science, information technology, digital media technology, biology, fisheries and aquaculture, natural resource protection, engineering, and chemistry, among many other areas.

Art and Design, and Performing Arts

Our graphic design and interior design students are regularly winning provincial awards for the quality of the work they produce. In our Theatre Department, students can learn both sides of the theatre process, either acting or production and our jazz and classical music programs are well recognized for excellence.


Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees offer 17 majors and minors including Anthropology, Criminology, Digital Media, Economics, Graphic Design, History, Global Studies, Liberal Studies, Physical Education and Psychology. Many of these programs along with our B.Sc. degrees are excellent preparation for graduate programs and professional degrees such as Law, Medicine, Architecture, and Dentistry, among others.


Our award winning Culinary Arts certificate program is an intensive 12 month program that will get students working in some of the best restaurants and hotels in the world. Graduates from this program are working throughout Europe, Asia, US, and Canada.

Residence offers three styles of rooms. Traditional Single: private bedroom furnished with a single bed and a desk, shared bathroom. Modern Single: private bedroom furnished with a single bed and a desk, shared bathroom. Rooms may either be located in an apartment style accommodation or a townhouse. Modern Double: shared bedroom furnished with a two single beds and two desks. All rooms share a bathroom with the unit neighboring them. Rooms may either be located in an apartment style accommodation or a townhouse. Residence area includes Beach volleyball and basketball courts, as well as games and activity rooms.

Incoming Students

A one week orientation is held for international students before the start of classes.

Facilities include new library, new student residences, new school of management, fitness centre, gymnasium, computer labs, language labs, wireless available, and two cafeterias.

Career Planning

Academic and program advisors are available. Support for employment and career advice is available. On-campus work is available for international students.


All students are welcome to join the intramural sports and to try out for the varsity teams. Some scholarships available for gifted international athletes.


VIU Campus Rec offers students opportunities to try a wide range of outdoor activities at a very reasonable cost. Kayak, climb, ski, cave, raft, surf, or hike. As well, students can join in a range of fitness classes, or drop into the gymnasium for indoor sports.


Associations and clubs include the Alumni Association, Anthropology Club, Business Students' Association, Child and Youth Care Club, DaVinci Club, Fair Trade Club, Film Society, Global Studies Association, Institute of Practical Philosophy Foundation, International Students' Association, English Students' Association, Milner Gardens and Woodland Club, Model United Nations, Navigator student newspaper, Popular Participation Movement, Rights and Democracy Club, Campus Radio Station, and VIU Student Union.

Information Technology

Wireless Internet access is available at campus drop in computer labs and is included in some residences. Video editing and printing rooms are available in student access labs and student e-mail accounts are available to all.


Internationa Centre, Theatre, Natural History Museum, Art Gallery, Japanese Gardens and Milner Gardens and Woodland.

Special Services

Vancouver Island University provides educational opportunities for non-traditional learners and students with disabilities. The campus is almost fully wheelchair accessible. Student support includes learning and research assistance, exam accommodation, note takers, scribes, student tutors, readers, talking books, interpreters, and specialized technical aids and equipment.

Affiliated Institutions

Vancouver Island University offers an International Masters in Business Administration and a Masters in Business Administration in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, England.

International Involvement

Vancouver Island University features programs in ESL, academic, career, and technical fields. The University has hosted students from Hong Kong, Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Mexico, Dominica, Africa, Finland, Ireland, and the United States.

Other international activities include individualized training programs for students on exchange contracts through CIDA or ACCC, Japanese contracts, summer language institute programs, and placement of instructors in countries throughout the world on short or long term training assignments. Services for international students include International Student Advisors and a Homestay program. Coordinators for the Homestay program provide students with information on Vancouver Island University's programs, community support services, orientation, accommodation, recreation and social opportunities, securing banking, medical and dental services, etc.

Campus Tour

Campus tours are held every Friday at 10:30 a.m. between April 1 and September 30. Tours leave from the lobby of Building 300 and end at 12 noon. Tours also available by appointment


Program advising, counselling services, financial assistance, services for students with disabilities, employment services, food services, student residences, co-operative education services, student directory, bookstore, library and A/V services, daycare centre, parking, public transit, recreation facilities, athletics programs, student newspaper, student society, art gallery and gift shop, theatre, natural history museum, arboretum, and Japanese gardens.
