Elementary School Teachers

(NOC 4142)

These comments are for the career grouping of Elementary School and Kindergarten Teachers.

Job prospects for this career are rated FAIR because:

For Secondary And Elementary School Teachers And Counsellors, over the period of 2011-2020, job openings are expected to total 153,279. It is expected that 147,254 job seekers will be available to fill these job openings.

The number of job openings is expected to decrease significantly in the coming years because of a considerable slowdown in employment growth. As the birth rate has been relatively stable since 2005 and will likely remain so over the projection period, the number of students going to elementary and high schools should remain stable, which will limit the need for new teaching positions. Job openings will therefore not result from employment growth but from the need to replace workers who retire.

Over 75 percent of job openings will be the result of retirements. With regard to labour supply, enrolment in education programs is expected to continue to rise, and hence, the number of job seekers in this occupation will correspondingly increase. An analysis of recent education program graduates also showed that, over the past few years, more people graduated from elementary and secondary education programs than actually went on to become secondary or elementary school teachers, which indicates that a number of education graduates do not become teachers.
