Sheridan Programs Can Help You Get a Post-Graduate Work Permit
Check out Sheridan's list of programs that can help you get a PGWP to work in Canada after graduation.
With the start of the new year many people think of their goals for their future. For you, that could mean applying to college in Canada, searching for scholarships, and getting a study permit. While that may seem like a lot, you should also consider your future after graduation. We know, that's so far away, why do you even need to think about it? Well, if you study in Canada, you might want to stay and work in Canada after graduation. To do this, you'll need a post-graduate work permit (PGWP), but to get a PGWP you'll need to consider what programs at Sheridan you apply to.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have announced new updates to the PGWP program, so now only certain programs will make you eligible for a PGWP. However, these programs will likely be highly sought-after thanks to these changes. Keep reading to find out which programs will help you get a PGWP.
What is a PGWP?
A post-graduate work permit is a document that allows you as an international student who has studied in Canada to stay here after graduating to gain valuable Canadian work experience. A PGWP will allow you to work in Canada for anywhere from eight months to three years, depending on the level and length of your study program in Canada.
The work you obtain through a post-graduate work permit can help support your application to become a permanent resident of Canada.
How do I get a PGWP?
To be eligible for a post-graduate work permit, you must meet all the eligibility requirements. For a full list of eligibility requirements along with any exceptions, make sure you check out the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
Let's explore some of the eligibility requirements for a PGWP as it relates to Sheridan:
- You completed a study program at a designated learning institute (which Sheridan is)
- You were a full-time student during each of your semesters
- You apply to your PGWP within 180 days after you graduate
- Your study permit was valid at some point during the 180 days after you graduated
- Your program must be eight months or longer
- If you submitted your study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, you must have graduated in an eligible field of study
Keep in mind, these are only some of the requirements you'll need to be eligible for a PGWP. Check out all the requirements on the IRCC website.
What Sheridan programs will help me get a PGWP?
If you submitted your study permit application on or before November 1, 2024, you must graduate in an eligible field of study. This new requirement is meant to help certain occupations in Canada that experience a long-term shortage of workers. As of December 17, 2024, the eligible fields of study are divided into six broad categories:
