Earn Canadian Work Experience While Getting a Great Education at Sheridan

One of the best reasons to attend a post-secondary education institution like Sheridan is the chance to earn Canadian work experience while pursuing your diploma or degree.

Experiential learning means developing the skills you learn in the classroom by applying them to real-world challenges. Experiential learning comes in different shapes and sizes, but in short, you'll get hands-on experience relevant to your program of study. Your experiential learning may take place in or outside the classroom, led by a Sheridan faculty member or an industry partner.

All of Sheridan's full-time programs include the chance to engage in experiential learning!

Let's look at the different types of experiential learning available, so you can decide if Sheridan's the right school to help you achieve your goals.

Work-integrated learning

Work-integrated learning takes place in a workplace environment, making it a popular choice for students who want to engage directly with challenges facing business and industry. Your work may be paid or unpaid, but you'll apply your skills, developed at Sheridan, to assist your new employer. You will develop your core competencies and subject-matter expertise, all while earning academic credit at Sheridan!

Here's a short list of types of work-integrated learning at Sheridan. Visit Sheridan Works for detailed information on these opportunities.

  • Apprenticeships
  • Field placements
  • Mandatory professional practice
  • Cooperative education
  • Internships (degree programs only)

Co-operative education and internships

Co-operative education (co-op) and workplace internships are some of the most popular choices for Sheridan students. To take part in a co-op or internship, you must meet certain academic requirements, depending on your program of study. You can find all of Sheridan's co-op / internship programs, with prerequisites, on the Sheridan Works co-op page here.

Course-integrated experiential learning

Much like work-integrated learning, with course-integrated experiential learning, you'll earn academic credit at Sheridan while developing your professional and employability skills. You'll learn in an academic environment, rather than a workplace, but you'll still use your growing program knowledge to complete tasks and build skills.

Here's a quick description of the types of course-integrated experiential learning at Sheridan. Check out Sheridan Works for more information on experiential learning!

Co-curricular recognition

Unlike the work-integrated or course-integrated experiential learning, co-curricular recognition (CCR) does not appear on your academic transcript. Still, engaging with your community outside of the bounds of academics is a great way to build your network, develop your skills, and explore your interests. CCR opportunities may be paid or unpaid, depending on the activity.

Take part in CCR at Sheridan — your resumé will thank you! Learn more about CCR at Sheridan on Sheridan Works.
