How do you know if a university is the right fit for you? Flipping through viewbooks can only tell you so much. Universities are big, vibrant, complex places – each with their own unique programs, specialities, community and vibe.

If we could offer you one piece of advice, it's this: reach out and talk to people. That may sound intimidating, but universities are filled with interesting and friendly people who would be more than happy to help you figure things out. People who were once in your very shoes.

What matters most to you when it comes to this next big chapter? Is it career outcomes? Campus community? Think about what questions will help you get a sense of whether a school aligns with what you're looking for.

Here are 15 questions to get the conversation started.

Questions to ask about the university and student life

1. What makes your university unique? What do students love most about your school?
2. How easy is it to access support like academic tutoring and/or mental health resources?
3. What accommodations do you offer for students with disabilities?
4. Do you have on-campus housing? Is housing guaranteed?
5. What is the average cost of tuition and fees per year?
6. Do you offer scholarships? What do I need to know about applying?

Questions to ask about programs/course of study

7. Do you offer any unique programs that you can't find anywhere else? OR: I'm interested in a career in _______ . What program gets me there?
8. I'm not sure what career I want to pursue yet. Do you have any options for students who are undecided on their program or major?
9. Are there opportunities for internships or hands-on work experience?
10. Can undergraduate students get involved with research or study abroad programs?

11. What are your admissions deadlines? How long after I apply will I hear back?
12. Can I sign up for email or text reminders about critical deadlines?
13. I'm worried my grades aren't competitive enough for admission. What are my options for upgrading or finding a path to admission?
14. Can I visit your campus for an Open House or campus tour?
15. What is the best way to get in touch with your admissions team if I have more questions later?
