Get Involved with CBU’s Campus Life

Your time spent at Cape Breton University isn’t just about what you study, it’s much more than that. It’s about the friendships you make, the adventures you take, and the sense of CBU pride you build while earning your degree. Whether you live off- or on-campus, getting involved in CBU’s campus life is an important piece of your university experience.

Explore what CBU can offer you:

Campus recreation

Build friendships and enjoy an active lifestyle while celebrating diversity through fun play and competition. The program creates opportunities to improve your physical and mental health but also enhance your social and leadership skills through a wide variety of activities.

So, lace up your sneakers, grab your favourite racket, and get involved! Here’s how:

Sports 4 All & Wellness (non-competitive)

Don’t have time to join a team or league full-time? Not to worry! Sports 4 All is comprised of an array of different sports and activities, including soccer, floor hockey, basketball, pickleball, cricket, badminton, and many more. These sports are played in a non-competitive environment and are done on a drop-in basis, although some activities will be structured at times.

Intramural sports leagues & tournaments (competitive)

Is competition your kind of sport? Well, our intramural program is for you! A dedicated and structured league, our intramural program provides an environment of fun, fair play, and athletic competition through a variety of sports. Depending on your sport preference you can register as a team or individually.

Club sports

Our competitive club sports provide the opportunity to compete in a sport or activity at a level higher than intramural sports. These are voluntary, non-profit, student-led organizations whose members assume club activities and financial responsibilities. Some clubs may also represent the University in sports leagues and tournaments either locally, regionally, or provincially.

Outdoor recreation

At CBU, we recognize the importance of spending time outdoors and the many benefits it provides for you. Spending time outside offers a great source of physical activity while providing opportunities to meet new friends, develop outdoor leadership skills, and experience the charm of Cape Breton Island. Our campus location provides access to many exciting outdoor activities including the learn to run program, track and field club training, skiing, snowshoeing, and much more.

Creative arts

Aside from physical sport, there are many other ways to get involved in campus recreation at CBU to enhance your university experience. Our Boardmore Theatre is home to the performing arts which presents an annual season of plays and festivals. The CBU Art Gallery is a hub of visual arts activity and education on Cape Breton Island. And, don’t forget about the Beaton Institute, the official repository and cultural heritage archive for Cape Breton Island historical records.

Interested in flexing your creative muscles while attending CBU? Creative arts at CBU provides great opportunities for you to stretch your artistic talents while making new and long-lasting friendships. Creative arts at CBU has something for everyone — from improv to podcasts — no experience necessary.

Spontaneous creation

Regularly scheduled drop-in sessions where you can try out improv, visual art, music, writing, and podcasts. Come by any time, no long-term commitment required.

Rehearsed and practiced

If you are interested in being part of a team or group who meet to rehearse and practice on a regular basis throughout the year, this is the place for you. Join an improv team or dance team, be part of the cast of one of the many productions at the Boardmore Playhouse, or check out the creative writing group or podcast team.

Performance / showcase

After all your creative work in the rehearsal process, you can showcase your projects on stage at the Boardmore’s Annual Season of Plays, or at the Art Gallery’s Annual Proletariart exhibit. How about a full broadcast of your very own podcast series, or a term-ending Theatre Sports competition? Are you a singer or musician? Wow an audience at Ovation, CBU’s Annual Creative Arts Festival.

No matter what your interests, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved. Make the most of your time at CBU by exploring the many recreational activities we have available!
