Carleton University Launches New AI Resource Hub
The AI Resource Hub is designed to help students navigate the world of generative AI tools, and use them responsibly.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, work and learn. Carleton's new AI Resource Hub can help you navigate this rapidly evolving field.
The new Resource Hub website is your guide to how AI can be used to enhance your learning. Explore tools that can help you with everything from productivity to research and writing. You'll also find information on how to use these tools safely and responsibly, including guides to help you with copyright and AI citation.
Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant integrated into Microsoft 365 applications that helps streamline tasks such as document creation, data analysis and meeting transcription to improve productivity and efficiency.
Microsoft Copilot is Carleton's recommended generative AI (genAI) platform
Copilot is Carleton's recommended genAI platform because it:
- has successfully completed the university's Data Protection Risk Assessment process, AND
- offers Enterprise Data Protection, meaning that AI chat sessions will not be stored or used for training
Microsoft has made a number of training resources and modules available to help users understand Copilot and its capabilities. We have included a selection of applicable resources on the Copilot training webpage.
AI policies and guidelines
Carleton has established guidelines for faculty and administration, which discerning readers can find on the Carleton website.
The Government of Canada has also prepared complete, lengthy guides on what genAI is and how to use it effectively and safely.
These guides outline risk levels that vary based on the tasks genAI is used for — from low-risk tasks like writing an email to a colleague or friend, to higher-risk tasks like deploying a chatbot or generating a summary of sensitive records.
Students, parents, and guidance staff interested in the ethics of genAI can check out UNESCO's AI Ethics and Governance Observatory for the latest recommendations. At its core: "The protection of human rights and dignity is the cornerstone of the Recommendation ... always remembering the importance of human oversight of AI systems."
